But I live right there… The words that you hear every time you are on a perimeter or crime scene. Anytime a street is blocked. Someone will come up and say “can I go to my house?” I tell them “no sorry it’s a crime scene” or “no there’s a guy running around with a gun here, we have dogs out looking for them.” And the following statement is always said “but I live right there.” OMG did you just hear what I said! Man with a gun! Dead guy in the street! Unbelievable!

This clip pretty much sums it up!

But I live right there

Egos…the cause of crime

Being in the business of crime fighting, we see quite a few things that make you say…Huh!?!  Recently I responded to an incident that made me think just that.  This question keeps playing over in my mind… What would cause someone to have such a big ego that they do something that gets them killed?

Recently I responded to an assault where a man had become so irate with his neighbor because he was talking shit to him, that he forced himself into the man’s residence and ended up being stabbed to death by the homeowner.  The man was killed in a common hallway and eventually died in a common parking lot.  The family of the deceased man was devastated and wanted revenge on the killer.  When we arrived the man who was stabbed knew that he was dying.  He was calling for his adult sons to hug him and be close to him as he was bleeding out.  I watched the man die a few minutes later as the fire department was working on him.  And for what?  What was the point of this tragedy?

Now granted this man was not the greatest member of society in fact he probably didn’t contribute anything to society… In reality he was probably hindering society everyday.  But the point is that his family, the man that stabbed him in self defense and the community as a whole are all suffering and their lives are changed forever.  All because this man had an ego and felt the need to shove it in the community’s face because he felt that he was owed the respect of someone who he didn’t never even spoke to before.  In my opinion this man is a very selfish man and he paid for it with his life.

I call this man selfish because his actions caused so much negative impact in this community.  There were numerous small children living in the complex where this occurred.  These children had to see and hear the foul language that was being yelled and see the entire violent encounter where the man was stabbed and ultimately bled out and died.  These kids have to grow up with these images in their minds and be afraid to play outside their homes because as much as I hope it doesn’t, something like this will probably happen again.

The parents of these children do not want their children to be outside in this complex.  Plus the family of the deceased wants retaliation so there is always the risk of retaliation where the community would be caught in the middle again.

Egos cause all kinds of problems.  Whether it’s gang members or domestic violence suspects or even those arrested for DUI, most people that are arrested have big egos and basically care only for themselves.  Most have big egos and are selfish.
